MAPPING MIGRATION MEMORIES EXHIBITION: INTANGIBLE LAB

Mapping Migration Memories is the result of a multi-year research project developed by VCUarts’ (In)>Tangible Lab. Gathering and using existing archived and recorded memories, photos, films, and oral histories, Mapping Migration Memories captures the historical biannual nomadic movements between the desert and the sea in Qatar.

Embarking on two expeditions to the desert, the artwork re-enacts migration along theAl Naimi and Al Marri paths and documents their real locations and soundscapes. Mapping Migration Memories emphasizes the importance of intangible practices and oral traditions so often lost in rapidly developing societies and acts as a testament to the passing down of generational knowledge and human perseverance.

As a research assistant at the Intangible Lab, I had the opportunity to contribute significantly to the visual aesthetic of our Musherib exhibition. I designed and printed limited edition Risograph posters, which were distributed as giveaways to attendees. Additionally, I worked collaboratively with my team to develop the graphic design for invitations, external posters, magnetic pins, and tote bags.

MAPPING MIGRATION MEMORIES EXHIBITION: WORKSHOP

The "Mapping & Memories & Words" workshop was a continuation of the Mapping Migration Exhibition. Led by Astrid Kensinger and the research assistants, this event provided a space for participants to express their personal experiences through visual storytelling. We shared our migration paths, memories, and words, creating a collective narrative.
